The new CenPEG book, Chit Estella: A Reader on Media Ethics, People’s Issues, and Governance, was launched on August 17 at the auditorium of the College of Mass Communication (CMC), University of the Philippines, in Diliman, Quezon City.
The book launch was held in partnership with the office of Dean Roland Tolentino of UP-CMC where Chit Estella was a journalism professor. The author met a tragic road crash on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City May 13, 2011.
The book is the first collection of Estella’s selected works written over the past 20 years. Her selected works – feature stories and academic papers - touch on media ethics, press freedom, gender sensitivity, Left figures, as well as political personalities.
The book’s Foreword was written by Vergel O. Santos, BusinessWorld publisher and CMFR Board Director.
A renowned journalist and mentor, Estella began her media career when she wrote for the Philippine Collegian in the late 1970s, followed by her involvement in the underground press, and her long stint as beat reporter and later as editor with various national dailies and online publications. The dailies include Malaya, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Times, Pinoy Times which she led as editor-in-chief, and the Philippine Journalism Reports of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility.
As a journalism professor, Estella co-founded the Vera Files, an online investigative magazine, where she wrote on books published by CenPEG as well as on the May 2010 automated elections.
Instrumental in the compilation of the selected works is her widower, Roland Simbulan, who is Board member and Fellow of CenPEG. Simbulan also served as a Faculty Regent of UP. Editorial work, cover design, and layout were done by CenPEG.
At the August 17 launching, book reviews were contributed by former CMC Dean Georgina Encanto, Monica Feria of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and feminist advocate and writer, Aida F. Santos. (LINK TO AIDA SANTOS REVIEW HERE)
